Measure the finished outline
Measure the maximum width and height of the patch, including its planned border. For a circle, provide the diameter. For an irregular shape, provide a drawing showing the maximum dimensions and key corners or cut-outs.
Use millimetres for consistency and state if your artwork is drawn at actual size. Avoid specifying only an area or a single dimension for a complex shape.
Check the placement
Create a paper template at the proposed size and place it on the garment or accessory. Check the patch against seams, pockets, closures and any curved surface. A patch can be technically producible but look oversized on a small cap panel.
Review detail at actual size
Print the artwork at 100% scale. Check lettering, small symbols and narrow gaps from a normal viewing distance. Ask which details may need adjustment for the manufacturing method.
Document variants
Separate each size and colourway in the enquiry. Explain whether the same design is required in different dimensions or whether the artwork changes as well. Quantity per variant can affect production planning and price.
