Woven patches vs embroidered patches

Compare texture, artwork detail and finishing choices before selecting your custom patch.

Start with the artwork

The right construction depends on your logo, the final patch dimensions and the appearance you want. A design that looks clear on a large screen may lose small details when reproduced at garment scale. Send the artwork at its intended dimensions so the manufacturing method can be discussed in context.

Woven and embroidered patches both use thread, but the construction creates a different surface. Compare them using the same artwork and size rather than judging unrelated samples.

Lettering and fine lines

Small text is affected by letter shape, contrast, spacing and the threads used. There is no single minimum text height that suits every design and machine setup. Ask for artwork review rather than relying only on a font size in a drawing program.

Open counters inside letters, sufficient spacing between lines and clear colour separation can help a design remain readable. Where artwork is too intricate, simplifying small details may be more effective than increasing colour count.

Borders and backings

The face construction is only part of the specification. Border shape, edge finish and attachment method affect how the patch looks and performs on the final item. Tell us whether it will be sewn to a cap, heat applied to a garment or attached to a removable uniform panel.

What to send for a useful comparison

  • The same logo for both methods.
  • Width and height in millimetres.
  • A photo or description of the item receiving the patch.
  • Quantity, backing preference and delivery destination.

Ask us to identify which details may need adjustment in each method. The final quotation will depend on the production specification rather than the product name alone.

Use the artwork as the deciding test

Compare the same logo at the same finished size. Woven construction offers a flatter appearance, while embroidery gives a more pronounced thread texture. Small lettering, gradients and narrow gaps should be reviewed directly rather than assuming either process reproduces all artwork unchanged.

Before you request a quote

Send these details with the artwork so the quotation can describe the proposed construction. Sample arrangements, minimum quantities and production timing are confirmed for your project.
